VGX Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer to Chair Vaccine Discovery and Commercialization Conference
Blue Bell, PA – May 22, 2006 –

VGX Pharmaceuticals announced today that Dr. David B. Weiner, the Company’s Co-Founder, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board and Dr. C. Jo White, Chief Medical Officer, will co-chair the Vaccine Discovery and Commercialization Conference from May 23 to 24, 2006 at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center in Philadelphia, PA. Drs. Weiner and White were selected as chairpersons based on their extensive expertise in discovering and developing novel vaccines for human application.

Dr. Weiner is considered a founder of the area of DNA vaccines, and his laboratory published the first DNA vaccine paper addressing HIV infection. In collaboration with others, Dr. Weiner helped to initiate the first FDA approved clinical trial of a DNA vaccine (HIV env/rev) as a therapy as well as the first prophylactic DNA vaccine trial, and he was a member of the committee that authored the FDA’s “points to consider document” establishing the guidelines for clinical evaluation of DNA vaccines. Dr. Weiner’s laboratory published the first work reporting that immune responses from HIV DNA vaccine can induce cellular responses in a primate, and can induce some level of protection in a primate. He has over 90 publications in the area of DNA vaccines (270 publications over all).

Dr. White has over 18 years of clinical and product development experience in the biopharmaceutical industry with over 13 years dedicated to clinical developments of several FDA-approved vaccines. She worked at Merck with Dr. Margaret Liu to file the first IND for a DNA influenza vaccine in the early 90s. She filed the initial BLA for the cold adapted influenza vaccine while she was at Aviron. Dr. White has worked on several BLAs and MAAs and has made multiple presentations to the FDA and the ACIP on data from clinical studies of various viral vaccines, resulting not only in licensure of 4 vaccines in the US and Europe and but also universal immunization recommendations by the ACIP for varicella vaccine.

According to the Conference web site (http://www.marcusevans.com), Vaccine Discovery and Commercialization Conference is an international conference on examining the science, technology, and business aspects of infectious diseases and how to effectively address this challenge to public health. This conference will strive to provide participants with valuable insight on emerging platforms being explored to design effective next generation vaccines; innovative technologies for vaccine delivery; clinical trials and vaccine production issues; regulatory compliance; and constructive dialogue to ferment strategic outlines for vaccine discovery and commercialization.
