Melanoma: Skin Cancer Facts

 

Skin cancer (both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancer) is the most common of all cancers accounting for more than 50% of all malignancies.

 

Melanoma is responsible for about 80% of all mortality due to skin.

 

The number of new melanoma cases diagnosed in the United States is increasing. About 8,000 people in the US died of melanomas during 2004.

 

Since 1973, the mortality rate for melanoma has increased by 50%

 

Median survival in patients with metastatic melanoma ranges from 6 to 10 months with few long-term survivors.

VGX-150 is the DNA delivered form of Vpr.  VGX has completed GMP manufacturing of the product for Phase I clinical studies.  The pre-clinical animal toxicology studies are underway.  Pre-clinical efficacy studies have shown that direct injection of VGX-150 in mouse models of melanoma leads to eradication of tumors (Molecular Therapy, 2006).
